Pregnancy – What to Do When Strangers Touch Your Belly

August 27, 2019

The sight of pregnant woman’s burgeoning belly tends to make strangers want to reach over and rub it. Some mothers-to-be relish in all the attention. After all, what’s good is the pregnancy glow if you can’t get some much-needed attention from it? If you’re one of these pregnant women, you may smile and encourage strangers to rub your growing belly. You may even discuss details of your pregnancy and tell strangers whether you’re having a boy or a girl, how along you are in your pregnancy, and so on.
On the other hand, some women are more private and they have a strong opinion on personal space. They may not want people to reach over and start rubbing their stomachs. It may just seem weird and offsetting to them. So, what do you do if you are pregnant and you do not want strangers to touch your belly?
Place Your Hand on Your Belly
When you see strangers who want to touch your pregnant belly, you can discourage them by automatically placing your hand on your stomach. Your hand can be a guard of sorts that protects your unborn baby from all these unwanted touches. Although most people (especially those who are polite) will respect this wish and keep their hands off, there will be rude people who don’t get the gesture and they will still touch your stomach in other places. In this case, you can step backwards and away from the stranger. They should get the idea.
Wear a T-Shirt that says “Don’t Touch the Bump”
Pregnancy is definitely the time to be polite. If you don’t random strangers touching your belly, why not wear a funny t-shirt with sayings like, “Don’t Touch My Bump” or “Hands Off?” You can find maternity apparel that is designed to help mothers like you get the message across that you do not want people to touch you.
Be Rude About It
When it comes to your unborn baby, you may have this hormonal urge to just be extra protective of your child. Since you’re pregnant and probably cranky – carrying 20 plus pounds around all the time is often draining and uncomfortable – you can be rude, if you want. If strangers touch your belly, and you don’t like it, speak up and tell them point-blank that you don’t like them touching your belly. “Please don’t touch my stomach,” is a nice way of explaining to people that you don’t like them touching you.
Get Used to Belly Rubs
Did you know that in some cultures getting belly rubs gives people good luck? Unfortunately, when you’re pregnant, your belly will get rubbed. Sometimes, strangers will just come up and touch you before you have time to react. Get used to it. It’s going to happen. Try to enjoy your pregnancy regardless.
