Foot Pain and Pregnancy

Pregnancy can affect the feet of the pregnant women. It can give rise to conditions, which can affect the feet and the legs of a pregnant woman. There are several preventive measures, which can help you to stop or lower the pain in foot during pregnancy.
Some of the causes, which can give rise to foot pain during pregnancy, are:
– Swelling in the legs and feet occurs due to hormonal imbalances, venous congestion and reduction in activity, fluid retention and laxity.
– Leg cramps occurs due to weight gain.
– Varicose vein is a resultant of weight gain.
– Toe nail changes
Flattening and lengthening of feet, which are due to wider gait, increased weight and forward shift of the center of body weight or relaxation of body ligaments. Flat foot is also known as over-pronation.
These foot complaints during pregnancy are quite common but can be easily prevented through conservative treatment. These problems can be prevented or reduced in pregnant women by providing adequate support to the feet. Support to the feet can be provided through stable shoes, arch supports or prescription orthotics. Pregnant women should avoid wearing too tight shoes or socks as the additional pressure exerted on the skin surrounding the nails can give rise to ingrown toenails.
The toenails should not be trimmed too short. The pregnant woman should eat healthy and well-balanced meals, as this shall supply the nutrients needed by the woman and the child. Pregnant women in order to improve their general health should do regular exercise. Walking is considered to be the best exercise. Large amount of water should be consumed to keep the body hydrated, which aids the body in retaining lesser amount of fluid.
It is generally observed that foot pain and pregnancy appear simultaneously, if you take a few precautionary measures and proper care of your feet then, foot pain can be avoided during pregnancy.
